Welcome to the latest question and answer session from Cavapoo Crew. Today’s question is about, yes, you guessed it, Cavapoo Zoomies.
The who the what, and the why.
Like many of us dog owners, your Cavapoo probably turns into a possessed missile at certain times of the day.
Arlo’s time to go nuts, tends to be in the early evening and at least 2 times a week.
You know, here there, everywhere, and you worry that they might hurt themselves?
Anyhow, this week’s question perfectly captures this chaos:
Is it normal that my Cavapoo goes absolutely bonkers at 7pm most nights?
Here’s my thoughts.
Are Cavapoo Zoomies Normal?
Let me tell you something…
You’re not the only one staring at your tornado of a dog, wondering if you’ve adopted a gremlin on speed.
Arlo used to get the zoomies so bad in the evenings, we considered booking an exorcist. One second calm , the next like a four-legged racing car.
H once bolted into the back garden…back into the house…..
…then charging back out with a bra in his mouth.
Tail up. Chest puffed. Full of energy.
And then, to top it off, he played keep away for a full 12 minutes like he’d just discovered a new game that he loved.
The neighbours saw.
The bra was ruined, and…
I died a little inside from embarrassment and in the end exhaustion from trying to catch the little bugger!
And yes, they are pretty normal.
So, let’s discuss further what this is all about.
What Are Zoomies, Really?
The technical term is Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs). But let’s be real, zoomies is way better and funnier name.
They’re normal, natural, and downright hilarious bursts of energy. Especially common in puppies and young Cavapoos.
It’s how your dog blows off steam, releases pent-up emotion, or just says:
‘I’m living my best life’.
It’s almost like they think, sod this, Im having some fun.
Why Cavapoos Get Zoomies More Often
Cavapoos are a breed that comes hand in hand with them and they tend to be more zoomie-prone because:
- ✅ They’re highly intelligent (easily overstimulated)
- ✅ They’re incredibly social (feed off your energy)
- ✅ They store energy like peppers store water.
If they’ve napped most of the day, you can bet they’ll make up for it with laps around your living room, garden, kitchen, later on.
Here’s a few facts:
Cavapoo Zoomie Fast Facts
✅ Zoomies are normal.
Signs of joy, excitement, or emotional release.
✅ Often triggered by routine.
Evening zoomies? Probably because this is when your home’s rhythm and vibe changes. It’s afte-dinner, kids settle, TV goes on, etc.
✅ Can Happen after restraint.
Post-groom, vet visit, or crate time? Zoom-zoom baby.
✅ Burn off mental AND physical energy.
Smart dogs need brain-drain, too, and this is their way.
That said, there are things to be remember and be mindful of.
When Zoomies Become a Problem
Zoomies + Slippery Floors = Potential Vet Bills
Make sure it’s a safe area — Hardwood floors and slippery marble could cause accidents!
Destructive zoomies? Move it outside.
Better safe than sorry. Ornaments broken. etc. If your dog has zoomies, probably better to let them happen in the garden.
Too many zoomies? Could mean boredom.
Look at your dog’s mental stimulation routine. Do they go for walks? Do they have fun time?
What You Can Do About It
- Let them get it out of their system — it’ll pass fast.
- Put valuables away, and underwear 😅
- Follow up with a calming chew, toy, or enrichment
- Use zoomies as a reward after calm crate time or training
- Build a “zoomie routine” to give structure to the chaos. For example: After dinner, go in the garden with them, when more likely to happen.
Final Thoughts on the Zoomies
Zoomies aren’t bad.
They’re part of the Cavapoo charm:
Smart. Sensitive. Slightly dramatic. And extremely entertaining.
But zoomies also tell you something:
Your dog needs outlets exercise, brain games, and leadership.
Remember to keep the area safe a possible when they are darting around like maniacs, and be careful with young or elderly people in the home as as small as Cavapoo dogs can be, the speed they pick up can knock them over.
