Welcome back to our Cavapoo Q&A, where the weird, the cute, and the clingy all get explained.
This week’s question will hit home for a lot of owners. It’s something I hear all the time, typically from my wife, and others around the world who own a Cavapoo.
Here’s the question again:
Why does my Cavapoo follow me absolutely everywhere — the toilet, the kitchen, the next room and so on?
The short answer is that they see you as their world and everywhere you go, they will follow. It’s why dogs are called loyal by many people.
The long answer?
Let’s dive in.

Right, where were we?
Oh, ye, your Cavapoo shadows your every move.
The first thing to mention is…
…you’re not imagining it.
You are being followed 🤣
Arlo, my Cavapoo has this sixth sense.
Especially when it comes to my wife’s movements.
She so much as reach for her slippers, and he’s up like a shot.
And occasionally, she nearly falls over him (hands up if you’ve experienced this’).
He acts like a pint-sized, four-legged bodyguard.
Toilet trip? He’s there.
Boiling the kettle? He’s watching.
Taking the bins out? She’s got backup.
Why Do They Do This?
Here’s the thing: Cavapoos are born clingy.
But in the sweetest way.
They’re what’s known as a ‘Velcro dog‘.
A breed that thrives on closeness and companionship.
It’s part Poodle, part Cavalier, and 100%…
…I need to know what you’re doing at all times.
And here are the likely reasons:
✅ Bonding – Your Cavapoo sees you as their best friend. Naturally, they want to be near you.
✅ Separation Sensitivity – Cavapoos do not like being left out. It’s not attention-seeking, it’s attachment.
✅ Routine Watcher – They study your habits like Sherlock Holmes. If bathroom = getting ready to leave = NOPE.
✅ Pack Instinct – Dogs follow their pack leader. That’s (probably) you, if you have done the correct things. Even if you’re just going for a wee, they follow most of the time.
Is It a Problem?
Not usually.
If your Cavapoo is following you around but seems relaxed, it’s probably just their way of saying:
‘I love you. I trust you. I’m with you, my best mate.’
However…
If your dog panics when you leave the room, barks when you’re behind a closed door, or gets destructive when left alone, that’s more than Velcro.
That could be separation anxiety.
What You Can Do
If it’s cute and harmless:
✔ Enjoy it. You’ve got a fluffy little stalker.
If it’s a little too much
✔ Build independence gradually. Encourage short moments of alone time.
✔ Teach a solid “stay” command for when you need a bit of space.
If it’s not so harmless:
✔ Work on calm departures and arrivals.
✔ Try enrichment toys when you leave the room.
✔ Practice “in and out” drills — leave for 30 seconds, return, repeat.
Quick tip: Don’t make a big fuss when leaving or returning. Keep it low-key to reduce emotional highs and lows.
Final Thoughts
Cavapoos follow you because they love you.
But sometimes, that love can turn into anxiety, especially if they’ve never learned to be okay alone.
If you’re struggling with clinginess or separation issues, don’t worry, it’s trainable and manageable most of the time.
And honestly?
It starts with understanding your dog’s mind and everything related to them and their breed..
Which is exactly what the Cavapoo Compendium helps you do.
It’s 63 rules and insights to make Cavapoo life smoother, funnier, and less ‘Can I PLEASE go to the loo alone.’
It also comes with a money back guarantee, so you have nothing to lose.
