How Much Sleep Does Your Cavapoo Need?(And what it means if they’re sleeping more — or less!)

Have you ever glanced at your Cavapoo snoring away, again, and thought:

Is this normal?’

You’re not alone.

Arlo (my Cavapoo) has this bizarre habit of sleeping upside down, tongue out, feet twitching like he’s chasing pigeons out of (HIS) garden in his dreams.

One night, I watched him snore through the afternoon viewing of ‘The Chase’ quiz show, and thought:

“Surely that’s enough napping for one day?”

Turns out, it was normal.

But how do you know if your Cavapoo is getting the right amount of sleep?

And when to worry if something’s off?

Let’s break it down.

How Much Sleep Do Cavapoos Need (According to Vets)?

We’ll start with what the professionals and experts suggest.

Age GroupRecommended Sleep Time
Puppies (8–12 weeks)18–20 hours a day (yes, really!)
Adolescents (3–12 months)14–18 hours per day
Adult Cavapoos12–14 hours (average)
Senior Dogs (7+ years)Up to 16–18 hours

Cavapoos, being an energetic, yet cuddly hybrid breed, need a lot of rest to stay emotionally and physically balanced, especially after play, stimulation, or learning new commands.

What Impacts Your Cavapoo’s Sleep Needs?

Cavapoo sleep patterns vary depending on:

  • Age & Growth Stage – Puppies and seniors need the most.
  • Exercise Levels – A well-exercised dog tends to rest more soundly.
  • Mental Stimulation – Training, puzzles, and socialisation can encourage restful sleep.
  • Environment – Noise, lighting, and even your schedule affect their rhythms.
  • Health – Sudden increases or decreases in sleep can be a red flag.

When to Worry About Too Much (or Too Little) Sleep

Keep an eye out for the following:

Sleeping significantly more than usual
Could signal boredom, lack of stimulation, depression, or an underlying health issue.

Not sleeping well or appearing restless
May indicate anxiety, poor diet, itchiness (skin conditions), or joint pain.

Changes in sleep patterns
If your Cavapoo suddenly starts sleeping at odd hours or becomes lethargic, consult your vet.

Always trust your gut. If something feels off, contact your vet for reassurance. It’s better to catch problems early.

Tips for Supporting Healthy Sleep Habits

Create a quiet, cosy sleeping spot (avoid high-traffic areas)
Stick to a consistent bedtime routine
Give exercise and enrichment during the day
Avoid heavy meals or intense play right before bedtime
Use a calming chew or toy to help them wind down

Pro tip: Dogs sleep best when they feel safe. Your Cavapoo may want to sleep near you, and that’s OK (as long as it works for both of you!).

Final Thoughts

Cavapoos sleep a lot, and it’s not laziness, it’s biology.

If your dog is getting between 12–14 hours daily and seems happy, active, and alert when awake, you’re doing it right.

And if they’re still a sleepyhead after that evening walk? Let them snooze,  they’re probably just dreaming about you, or how they can steal your socks from the laundry basket, or a nice juicy steak on plate.
