The Overlooked Link Between Dog Food, Calmness and Quality of Life
You don’t forget the way your Cavapoo looks at you. Those soft searching eyes, that wagging tail, the way they follow you from room to room.
These are some of the moments when you realise you’re their entire world and they really do depend on you.
And that means every choice you make, especially what and how you feed them, really does matter.
For example, a 14-year study by Purina found that dogs who were kept lean through diet lived up to 1.8 years longer than those allowed to overeat. For small to medium breeds like Cavapoos, where lifespans average 12–15 years, that’s a significant gain. Not just in quantity, but in quality of life.
My view is that if I you make a few simple changes to your dog’s diet, or should I say pay a bit more care, then this is an avenue you should want to explore.
From my own personal experience, when I started to feed Arlo a better diet, I also noticed other benefits too such as:
- Better healthier looking coat
- Firmer poop
- Calmer dog (that seemed to listen to commands better)
I’m guessing that like humans, our diet and what we eat, and true of dogs too, what we eat really does have a positive effect on health and wellbeing.
So, What Makes a Nutritionally Balanced Dog Diet?
A good diet for a dog in general needs the right blend of the following:
Protein – For muscle, energy, and a healthy coat
Choose real meat like chicken, salmon, beef, or lamb. Avoid vague terms like ‘animal meal’ ‘derivatives’ or ‘meat by-products’. You should be looking for ingredients with a daily high meat percentage. Personally, I would aim for at least 50% meat, higher the better really.
Fats – For coat condition, brain function, and energy
Healthy sources include fish oil, flaxseed, and chicken fat. Avoid generic “animal fats” and hydrogenated oils.
Carbs – For sustained energy
Good sources: sweet potatoes, brown rice, oats, peas
Try to Avoid: corn or wheat as the main ingredient, especially when used as cheap filler.
Vitamins & Antioxidants – For immunity and cell repair
These are best when they come from real foods like carrots, spinach, blueberries, not synthetic additives.
If you get this balance of nutrition right, and a touch of life luck and regular health checks, your dog could live for longer.
A Cavapoo’s Unique Nutritional Needs

Okay, so I don’t need to tell you that Cavapoo dogs are adorable, but did you know that they are metabolic powerhouses.
These friendly bundles of energy burn calories at a rate that would make a marathon runner jealous. Their smallish size means they need calorie-dense food. Their Poodle heritage means they need nutrients for their gorgeous coat. Their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genes mean they need heart-healthy nutrition.
Here’s what makes a Cavapoo different:
- As mentioned, smaller breeds like Cavapoo dogs have faster metabolisms. They need more calories per pound of body weight than larger dogs. They also risk hypoglycaemia if they don’t eat regularly. For example, a 10-pound Cavapoo may need around 400 calories per day (40 calories per pound), while a 100-pound dog might need 2,250 calories per day (22.5 calories per pound)
- Because of their small stomachs, smaller breeds tend to need nutrient-dense food to meet these higher energy demands without overeating
- Cavapoo puppies need up to twice the calories of adult dogs. Senior Cavapoos need fewer calories but more high-quality protein to maintain muscle mass as they age
- Cavapoos can inherit heart conditions from their Cavalier side and eye problems from their Poodle side. The right nutrition can help prevent these issues.
- Some Cavapoos are couch potatoes. Others could outrun a greyhound. Match the food to the dog, not the breed stereotype
The Ingredients That Matter
Walk down any pet food aisle. You’ll see hundreds of brands, each claiming to be the best. Most are lying or using sneaky tricks on the packaging to fool you.
Here’s how to spot the truth:
✅ Look for Real Meat First
The first ingredient should be a named meat source. Chicken. Beef. Salmon. Lamb.
❌ Avoid: “meat meal”, “poultry by-products”, “animal digest”.
✅ Demand Healthy Fats
Your Cavapoo’s curls need omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Good fats:
- Fish oil
- Flaxseed
- Chicken fat
❌ Avoid: Generic “animal fat”, excessive vegetable oils.
✅ Choose Complex Carbohydrates
Dogs need carbs for energy, but not all carbs are equal.
Good carbs:
- Sweet potatoes
- Brown rice
- Oats
- Peas
❌ Avoid: Corn as the main ingredient, wheat fillers, excessive grain content.
✅ Seek Natural Vitamins and Minerals
Whole food sources beat synthetic alternatives every time.
- Blueberries for antioxidants
- Carrots for beta-carotene
- Spinach for iron
- Real meat for B vitamins
Quick Nutrient Checklist for Cavapoos
| Nutrients | Why It Matters | ✅ Look For | ❌ Avoid |
| Protein | Muscle health, energy | Chicken, Salmon, Lamb | Meat by-products |
| Healthy Fats | Coat & brain health | Fish oil, Flaxseed | Generic “animal fat” |
| Complex Carbohydrates | Sustained energy | Sweet potatoes, oats, peas | Corn as main ingredient |
| Vitamins & Antioxidants | Immune system, cell repair | Blueberries, carrots, spinach | Artificial vitamins or colours |
The Red Flags That Scream “Run”
❌ Artificial preservatives – BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin are linked to health problems.
❌ Artificial colours – Dogs don’t care about colours. These are for marketing.
❌ Generic meat sources – “Meat and bone meal” could include anything from diseased animals to euthanised pets.
❌ Excessive fillers – Corn gluten meal and wheat middlings inflate protein numbers without real nutrition.
❌ Sugar and sweeteners – These contribute to obesity and dental decay.
Fresh vs Raw vs Kibble: A Comparison
| Food Type | ✅ Pros | ❌ Cons | Best For |
| Kibble | – Convenient – Affordable – May aid dental health | – Processed – May include fillers & preservatives | Busy households, budget-conscious |
| Fresh | – More digestible – Nutrient retention – Palatable | – Needs refrigeration – Can be costly | Owners who value freshness & variety |
| Raw | – Mimics ancestral diet – May improve digestion & coat | – Bacterial risks – Nutritional imbalance if homemade | Committed owners with experience or supervision |

Special Considerations for Cavapoos
- 🐾 Portion control is critical: Small breeds gain weight fast. Use a digital kitchen scale, not a scoop.
- 🐶 Feed multiple small meals per day: Prevents hypoglycaemia and keeps energy steady.
- 🌀 Transition new foods slowly: Over 7–10 days, gradually increase new food.
- 🌾 Watch for allergies: Chicken, wheat, and soy are common culprits.
- 🦷 Consider dental health: Mix textures (e.g. kibble with wet food or chews) to reduce plaque.
As always, chat with your vet or qualified person if you have any health concerns or worries regarding your dog.
Example of A Feeding Schedule for an Adult Cavapoo (Approx. 7–10kg)
| Time | Meal |
| 7:30 AM | 50% of daily portion |
| 1:00 PM | Optional enrichment treat (e.g. Lickimat, Kong) |
| 6:00 PM | Remaining 50% |
Adjust quantities based on your dog’s weight, activity, and food brand.
Fresh vs Raw vs Kibble: A Comparison
| Food Type | ✅ Pros | ❌ Cons | Best For |
| Kibble | Convenient, Affordable, May aid dental health | Processed, May include fillers & preservatives | Busy households, budget-conscious |
| Fresh | More digestible, Nutrient retention, Palatable | Needs refrigeration, Can be costly | Owners who value freshness & variety |
| Raw | Mimics ancestral diet, May improve digestion & coat | Bacterial risks, Nutritional imbalance if homemade | Committed owners with experience or supervision |
Making the Right Choice for Your Dog’s Nutrition
- 💷 Start with your budget: Premium foods cost more—but can reduce vet bills long-term.
- 🏠 Consider your lifestyle: Kibble suits busy families; fresh food suits homebodies; raw needs commitment.
- 🐕 Watch your dog: Healthy weight? Good coat? Solid stools? Keep going. If not, switch and chat to your vet.
- 📦 Ignore marketing fluff: Read the label, not the branding.
- 👩⚕️ Ask the pros: Again, Vets and vet nutritionists can guide you on diet plans.
Cavapoo Recommended Dog Food
Picture Arlo, my Cavapoo, a bouncy Cavapoo who loved zoomies but struggled with nights of unwanted barking, restlessness, and sloppy poos (sorry, no other way to write this).
His owner—yours truly, tried lots of different food, including good-grade kibble, but still, not much changed.
Then I decided to make my own food, and Arlo steadied in all compartments. But there was still a problem. This became time-consuming and, frankly, a real pain. I’d often find myself drifting back to kibble out of convenience and exhaustion.
But then I tried another solution: a fresh dog food subscription service that delivered meals straight to my door.
This was pre-portioned to the perfect size and amount for Arlo’s sixe, breed and weight.
This, for me, was a godsend.
Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than supermarket kibble. But it’s a lot less stressful. Arlo’s coat became glossier, his poos firmed up, and the food rarely went untouched.
I simply popped his gently cooked, human-grade meals into the bowl, and my little (and often very fussy) Cavapoo actually looked forward to mealtimes.
The secret?
Butternut Box.

Sidenote: I’m proud to say I’ve now completed Butternut Box’s Dog Nutrition School course and passed with flying colours. I also recently became an official brand ambassador. But honestly, this recommendation comes from personal experience, not a sales pitch.
What impressed me most wasn’t just the convenience or the clear improvements in Arlo’s health, but the science behind the meals.
Butternut Box Benefits at a Glance
- Gently cooked at low temperatures to retain nutrients
- Packed with fresh meat, vegetables, and gut-friendly fibre
- Pre-portioned based on your dog’s breed, age, activity, and weight
- Free from nasties like artificial preservatives, colours, or added sugars

They’ve even carried out research showing improvements in gut microbiome diversity, skin health, and stool quality, just from switching to their fresh food plan.
In short: it’s food that’s not only tasty and convenient, but also backed by science and real-world results.

The Bottom Line
Your Cavapoo trusts you to make the right choices. They can’t read labels or browse nutrition studies.
They can only trust that you’ll give them the best shot at a long and joyful life.
As shown in the Purina Life Span Study, dogs maintained at a healthy body condition can live up to almost two years longer.
Two years of cuddles. Two years of walks. Two years of love.
Isn’t that worth reading a few ingredient labels?
Start today. Check your dog’s current food. If it doesn’t measure up, think about upgrading. Their future self will thank you.
Because the best time to feed your Cavapoo better was yesterday. The second-best time is now.
FAQs: Cavapoo Dog Food & Nutrition
There’s no one-size-fits-all. High-quality kibble is practical. Fresh food offers digestibility. Raw may suit experienced owners. The key is quality, balance, and how your Cavapoo responds.
Yes. Chicken is a common allergen in dogs. If your Cavapoo has itchy skin, ear infections, or digestive upset, consider switching proteins and speak with your vet.
Not necessarily. Whole grains like oats and brown rice can be healthy. The FDA has also warned of potential heart risks with some grain-free foods. Choose wisely and consult your vet.
Yes, but you must balance nutrients carefully. Work with a vet nutritionist to avoid deficiencies in calcium, taurine, and essential vitamins.
This depends on their weight, age, and activity. A 7–10kg adult Cavapoo may need around 300–400 kcal per day. Use the feeding guide on the food labels of the dog food packaging and monitor your dog’s body condition.
